Valentine’s Day – Love it/Hate it

Today is Valentine’s day, as I’m sure you’ve heard. Every Valentine’s day, I’m met with mixed emotions; there are things that I love about it and things that I really hate:

Love: Chocolate. I really love the excuse to eat chocolate. Screw the dark chocolate; today is all about milk chocolate with a soft caramel center.

Hate: How gross I feel after eating so much stinking chocolate!

Love: Watching my boys’ enthusiasm for this day. I mean, they’re mostly excited for all the candy they’ll get, but it’s still cute to see them get into it. In fact, my 10yo last night asked me why daddy’s company doesn’t give him off today. How funny is that?

Hate: Every single jewelry store commercial. Come on people! That’s not how life works. Like the dude who went in and had the ring sized beforehand… so when his girlfriend “dragged” him ring shopping she’d be stunned by the fact that it actually fit. Then, romantically, down on bended knee he goes, right there in the store. Barf.

Love: My build-in Valentines (aka, my boys). For the past few years, my husband has been away for Valentine’s at his national sales meeting. So for the past three years, the boys and I have been going out to a special Valentine’s dinner together. Tonight we are to go somewhere where they have fortune cookies (as requested by my 8yo). So Chinese it is. Greasy egg roll? Bring it!

Hate: The pressure to be romantic. When you’ve been with someone for as long as I have (20 years) it’s too much trouble to force romance. Fortunately, because my husband is always away on Valentine’s day, pressure’s off!

Love: Wearing pink. I love pink. I’m just that kind of girl. Today, I’m wearing a hot pink sweater and earnings with little pink flowers. Yes, pink. I love pink.

Hate: The way this holiday makes those who are either in an unhappy relationship or not in a relationship at all feel. I mean, talk about rubbing it in. How come there’s no “I’m single and happy to be so” day?

Love: Getting hysterical texts from  my girlfriends making fun of this holiday. Usually it’s one large group text that starts first thing in the morning and goes on for the entirety of the day. It typically gets crude and off-color… and funny as hell!

Hate: Forcing my kids to sit down for an extended period of time to fill out their Valentines for their classmates. Torture.

Love: Waking up to sweet kisses from my boys (and a phone call from hubs) with a genuinely sweet “Happy Valentine’s Day.”

What about you? Do you love this day or hate it? Or are you indecisive like me?

Yes yes yes! I hated this holiday, until I had kids. Now, it’s too cute watching their faces light up for the simplicity of chocolate for breakfast, flowers, and a SMALL token to remember love. You put it so well! Yes, I loathe jewelry story commercials!

  2. I think Valentine’s Day is stupid. Except for the candy. I like that.

I hate the holiday itself, but nice to have excuse to give hubby preferred treats and treatment, after all he does for me and our family every day of the year. And of course, taking joy in daughter and boys doing ‘their’ thing, like the fortune cookie project
